NASA leader Raila Odinga has revealed that the opposition coalition stands opposed to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win in the repeat presidential election. While addressing the press at Okoa Kenya offices, Raila Odinga termed the repeat poll as sham elections, “We NASA are resolute that the sham elections cannot and will not be allowed to stand,” he said, adding that they won’t allow President Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto to destroy the dream of freedom and democracy that generations have worked for.
Raila said that the constitution outlines that not all elected leaders can excise power, “A president who is elected in an election that does not comply with the constitution can’t constitutionally exercise authority on behalf of the people,” he said, insisting that the highest office in the land will be occupied by a person who has usurped power.
He further said that IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati told them that the commission couldn’t conduct free and fair polls days before the repeat polls, but his resignation plan didn’t come to fruition.
Given that there have been calls for a dialogue, the NASA leader said they had already pursued dialogue before, “All political differences are resolved through dialogue. NASA has pursued dialogue with IEBC when we wanted changes in the electoral body to ensure free and fair elections but our efforts bore no fruits,” he said. He said that the opposition supports dialogue. However, he said that the problem isn’t between him and President Uhuru Kenyatta, rather, it’s a larger field, “The political crisis we have is about free and fair elections, democracy and constitutionalism.”
