NASA supporters on Friday welcomed leader Raila Odinga at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, after his 10-day-trip to the USA. NASA supporters lined Mombasa Road in Nairobi as they waited for the NASA principal, and after he landed, there was a long procession of supporters escorting him.
Raila landed at the airport at around 11 am, and was warmly welcomed. Earlier, the national resistance movement supporters had engaged police officers in tussles as they tried to access the JKIA grounds. Police had set up roadblocks along Mombasa Road, and supporters couldn’t access the airport grounds. The supporters engaged police around Cabanas area, and teargas canisters were hurled by the officers.
Security was heightened around the airport and along the highways, including Uhuru Highway. On Thursday, Emabakasi East MP Babu Owino, Ruaraka MP Tom Kajwang and former Starehe parliamentary aspirant Steve Mbogo were arrested as they headed to a NASA rally at Kibera, in preparation for Raila Odinga’s arrival, though they were later released.
