The Communication Authority of Kenya is aiming at spearheading economic development through the national address system; this will in essence widen business prospects in the Country with both public and private sectors enjoying the benefits.
The affair has support from the private sector and the national government so as to expand e-commerce in the country and enhance market analysis.
According to the Director General Communications Authority of Kenya Mr. Francis Wangusi,Mr. Francis Wangus volumes of e-commerce are successful today as a result of improved road networks and communication networks.
Wangusi also said that the mobile financial services have helped to boost e-commerce in remote areas.
“The national address system through partnership of public and private sectors is aiming at promoting e-commerce in county governments for development,” said Wangusi.
Wangusi was speaking to various e-commerce stakeholders in Nairobi on Friday during the opening of a workshop to launch the National Address System highlighting the need for inaugurating and sensitizing county governments to embrace e-commerce.
He furthered that many countries that have deployed the National Address System (NAS) posit a strong correlation between physical addressing and growth of e-commerce.
“Speaking to the crosscutting nature of the matter at hand, we do recognize that schedule 4 of the constitution gives the mandate of physical planning to the counties, placing the greater responsibility of generating all property numbers required in primary addressing on County governments,” he added.
The address system also intends to renovate postal services uniformly countrywide to ease economic affairs especial for the Small Medium Enterprises (SME’s).
Other than providing opportunities for e-commerce, increased communication and economic development activities, an effective and reliable NAS is an essential tool for supporting various essential services to citizens expeditiously.
Currently the successful e-commerce businesses in Kenya include, OLX Kenya, Jumia, Kaymu, Rupu, M-pesa and e-bay among others.
