The National Assembly is in deep mourning following the shocking demise of the Honourable Charles Ong’ondo Were, Member of Parliament for Kasipul Constituency. The heartbreaking news, delivered by Speaker of the National Assembly, the Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Moses F.M. Wetang’ula, detailed the tragic incident that occurred along Ngong Road on Wednesday evening, April 30th, 2025.

According to the notification, Hon. Ong’ondo Were succumbed to fatal injuries after being shot at close range by two assailants on a motorcycle. The news has sent shockwaves through the political landscape and the nation at large.

Hon. Ong’ondo Were was a dedicated public servant, serving his second term in Parliament and committedly representing the people of Kasipul Constituency. His commitment extended to his roles within parliamentary committees, where he actively participated in the Departmental Committee on Blue Economy, Water and Irrigation, and the Select Committee on National Cohesion and Equal Opportunity.

Speaker Wetang’ula poignantly described the late MP as “an affable, humble and non-confrontational person,” emphasizing the profound loss felt by his colleagues. He further highlighted the grave implications of this violent act, noting the “disheartening depreciation of the cardinal virtue of respect for the sanctity of life.”

In response to this tragedy, the Speaker has taken immediate action, instructing the Inspector-General of Police to conduct a swift and thorough investigation into the shooting and to present the findings to the House. Furthermore, a directive has been issued to enhance the security of all Kenyans, with a particular focus on national leaders.

On behalf of the entire National Assembly and the parliamentary fraternity, Speaker Wetang’ula extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the people of Kasipul Constituency, and all those who knew and loved the late Hon. Ong’ondo Were, acknowledging him as a “gallant leader.”

The Speaker assured the nation that further information and guidance, including details regarding funeral arrangements, will be provided as the situation unfolds.
