In a statement signed by the Acting Inspector General of Police, Gilbert Masengeli, the National Police Service (NPS) has denied claims that it withdrew two police officers assigned as security detail for Judge Lawrence Mugambi.
According to the statement, the officers were called back by the department to attend specialized training, contrary to claims made by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
Yesterday, Monday, Chief Justice Martha Koome issued a statement suggesting that the withdrawal of Judge Mugambi’s security was an attempt to intimidate him following his ruling, where he sentenced Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli to six months in jail.
The police department, however, emphasized that arrangements have already been made to ensure Judge Mugambi’s safety.
The statement also clarified that the police sent a Deputy Inspector General to represent Masengeli in court, wondering why the court insisted that Masengeli himself attend, despite the fact that the required response was not personal but could be delivered by a senior officer within the department.
