President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed that the nationwide dusk to dawn curfew be extended for a further 60 days effective 29th September. The curfew time will be from 11:00pm to 4:00am. Speaking during the NERC conference at the KICC, President Kenyatta has also said bars will resume operations and the sale of alcohol will resume, effective Tuesday, 29th September. The bars, eateries, restaurants will be closed by or at 10pm, however, effective 29th September. All these in operation will be required to observe all Covid-19 safety guidelines.
The permitted maximum size for religious gatherings at places of worship has also been expanded to a 1/3 of the total capacity of the religious meeting places. The number of people attending funerals and weddings has also been increased to 200, provided all Covid-19 safest protocols are strictly adhered to.
To cushion the the small businesses and the low income earners, the President has announced a raft of measures. Treasury has been directed to retain the VAT of 14% until 1st July 2021. Treasury has also been directed to retain the income tax rate at 25% to January 2021, and also retain the resident income tax at 25% till January 2021. To cushion low income earners, the President has announced a 100% tax relief of persons earning up to Kshs 24,000 beyond 31st December 2020.
