Leaders from West Pokot County have dismissed new regulations set by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on campaign funds to be used by political aspirants.
Led by area Governor Simon Kachapin, the leaders cited that the rules to regulate sources and sponsors of political aspirants are tough and it will be hard for the commission to implement them.
“These rules are good and easy for a developed country. Kenya is still developing and it will be hard for the funds to be audited,” he said.
Kachapin noted that it will be a hard task for the commission to implement the regulations as Kenyans are used to using a lot of money during campaigns.
“We wish them well but they should re-look at the rules,” Kachapin said.
On party nominations, the County Boss said that political parties have freedom to choose candidates in party nominations and that the electoral reforms need to be properly checked.
“The parties can appoint, nominate or use any way to get its candidates. It will be expensive for the parties to use IEBC in the nominations,” he reiterated.
Speaking at St. Eliza’s Girls Kabichbich yesterday during a funds drive to improve school infrastructure, Kachapin lauded the IEBC commissioners for accepting to exit.
“It is good for the commissioners to exit because of the pressure as many people no longer have faith in them,” he said.
Kachapin called on Jubilee and Cord Coalitions to speed up the process of releasing the current body and agree on the new electoral body to prepare for the coming general elections.
“It is good for the two coalitions to come to an agreement on the new commission so as to get enough time to prepare for the elections. This will give Kenyans a chance to prepare themselves for the elections too,” he said.
