Residents of Sango in Maraka Ward have received good news with the launch of a new secondary school aimed at alleviating overcrowding in nearby schools. The new school will help ease congestion at Muji Secondary, St. Mathews ACK, and St. Paul’s Secondary School, which have been overwhelmed by high student numbers and limited infrastructure.
The launch ceremony was attended by Webuye East MP Martin Pepela Wanyonyi, who praised the establishment of the new school, emphasizing its importance in improving access to education. “I am happy that this school will decongest many schools around and help our boys and girls who have been walking long distances in search of education. This is especially crucial for girls, as early morning walks to school can sometimes pose risks,” Wanyonyi said.
The legislator expressed his commitment to fully supporting the new school, assuring residents that efforts would be made to ensure the school’s registration as a public institution. He also announced plans to help the school by paying school fees for the first 38 students and any others who join. “I will send my staff along with the head teacher to fill the necessary forms for bursaries, ensuring that every student receives Ksh 5,000 school fees. This initiative will not only help attract more students but will also ensure that we meet the required number for the school to be registered as a public institution and qualify for government capitation,” he added.
He also noted that Maraka Ward has historically received limited funds for education due to the small number of schools, a situation that has sparked political debate. “The new school will ensure a more equitable distribution of educational resources across the three wards”, he said.

Dr. Paul Rono, Webuye East Sub County Education Director echoed the MP’s sentiments, confirming his full support for the school’s registration. “This will increase the number of secondary schools in the Sub-County to 28, which is still too few considering the large number of students in our area who, at times, have to attend schools in neighboring Sub-Counties like Lugari, Kimilili, and Webuye West,” Dr. Rono said.

Area MCA Hon. Ali Machani Mutoka praised the strong collaboration between the local leaders, despite being elected from different political parties and coalitions. This unity, he said, had led to significant development in the area, including the opening of the new school. “We have worked together, and this has led to the launch of a new school in our ward. Let us continue to work in unity for the development of our people, as elections are over and political affiliations should no longer divide us,” Machani said.

In addition to local leaders, community members such as area chief Mr. Samwel Kisuya and the head teacher of Sango DEB Primary school also expressed their gratitude for the new development, which they believe will greatly improve educational opportunities in the area.

Bungoma East KNUT Secretary General Mr. Robert Mandila urged residents to consider selling land for the school’s expansion, ensuring that local children can access education without having to travel long distances. “Let us work together and create a conducive learning environment for our children,” Mr. Mandila said.
