ODM leader Raila Odinga has said there is no reason why the referendum should not happen, and cast aside financial excuses that may hamper one. Speaking at the Chungwa house in Nairobi on Thursday, Raila said a referendum doesn’t require more than Kshs 2 billion to happen, “Don’t say there is no money to do it, there is money to do it.” The referendum is expected to take a step closer to fulfilment after the BBI taskforce team finally hands over the final report to President Uhuru Kenyatta and the former Prime Minister.
He said countries with democracies around the world have held referendums and Kenya is not different, “And we can teach Mr. Chebukati. We are going to show them (IEBC) how to do it.” On the state of the party, he said ODM is an opposition party and at the same time, it’s in government.
He attributed this to the fact that the party has 16 Governors in the Counties and more than 16 County assemblies where they have the majority representation, “In essence, we are also a ruling party.” He said at the national level, the party has representation in the form of MPs and members of the Senate.
