The traffic department has directed boda boda riders in Lugari Sub County to take note of their passengers in order to enhance the security of the area. Kakamega County Driving Test Examiner, Mr. Jamal Noor made the appeal at Lumakanda Police Station where he conducted a riding test to boda boda riders drawn from various part of Lumakanda ward.
“We have noted most incidents where thugs attack and forcefully take away riders’ motorcycles at night,” said Noor.
Noor disclosed the county traffic department has put in place a raft of measures aimed at enhancing the safety of road users in the region. “That is why we are now insisting that all boda boda operators must take note of vital identity details of all passengers carried after 6pm,” added Noor.
The official asked chairpersons in charge of all boda boda terminuses to provide record books, where any person taking a boda boda motorbike after 6pm will have to register their names and national identity card or passport numbers.
“No boda boda should carry any individual who fails to produce required identification documents after the stipulated hour,” directed the traffic officer who further warned against carrying drunk passengers.
The officer further cautioned sick people and especially those suffering from epilepsy against driving vehicles and motorbikes.
Noor further appealed to the riders to observe traffic regulations in order to reduce the loss of lives and property associated with motorbike accidents.
Lugari Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD), Mr. Bernard Macharia warned that any operator who will be found without the necessary traffic documents and attires will be removed from the road and taken to court and charged with violating traffic rules.
“Any operator minus a valid riding license, insurance cover, and proper attire which includes warm and reflector jackets, helmet and pair of gumboots will be removed from our roads,” warned Macharia.
The police boss insisted that riders shouldn’t carry more than one passenger. A total of 30 boda-boda riders drawn from Lumakanda location successfully went through the riding test and will soon be issued with licenses.
