Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago has urged North Rift farmers to embrace avocado farming as it has a ready market in overseas countries.
Speaking during the distribution of avocado seedlings to farmers from the region, Mandago said avocado farming is one of the best farming so far that has a lot of income urging farmers to embrace it and put it into practice in order to reap more.
He cited that diversification is the way to go thus farmers should invest in different farming including avocado, tea, coffee and vegetables not only relying on one type of farming like maize which has lost its market.
“North Rift region is well known for largely maize and wheat farming for a long time, it is time for farmers in this region to change their attitude and embrace diversification for the betterment of their lives,” said Mandago
He revealed that avocado farming especially for the Hass variety type has a ready market in overseas countries where a kilo goes up to Kshs 80 thus generates a good income compared to maize farming.
Governor Mandago added that majority of farmers who have joined cooperative movements are reaping huge through avocado farming which has transformed their lives tremendously and there is need to sensitize farmers on the importance of avocado farming.
