Nzoia region banks the National Primary School trophy
Coast Region is the 2016 primary schools boys’ soccer champion in the just concluded MILO national finals at Eldoret thrashing Mau 7 goals to 6 in post-match penalties.
Coast’s first goal was found through an own goal scored by Mau’s defender Kiprono Ronald before they added another at the 29th minute through James Elgis -who also emerged the top scorer.
Hassan Mohammed from Mwaligulu Primary School who also plays for Morocco FC in Shanzu netted Coast Region’s first goal in the 29th Minute while his teams mate Ismael Mohammed added another in the 52nd minute.
Coast scored all its five penalties to break the tie after stoppage time with Mau Region, whose tension was heightened by thousands of football fans who turned up in their support loosing their first penalty taken by Masinde Antony.
Lake Region clinched the girls’ soccer title after beating Nzoia 1-0 in another entertaining Mashemeji derby Hill School.
The only goal that separated the two teams was scored by Mercy Akoth of Awasi Primary at the 13th minute to record the 5th goal for the Lakeside team.
Host Mau Region retained both boys’ and girls’ volleyball titles after putting a spirited fight in the finals beating Highlands by 3 sets to nil (26, 24; 25, 13; 25, 23) in boys’ volleyball.
Loyce Wangne, the captain of the Mau girls volleyball team led her team to clinching the third consecutive title when they beat Nzoia by three sets to nil (25, 18; 25, 21; 25, 13) in the girls’ finals.
Nzoia Region retained the overall trophy recording an impressive performance in the entire tournament bagging both Gymnastics and Netball titles for boys and girls.
They beat Lake Region by 12 to 11 in net ball to reclaim the boys’ title which they last won in 2013 besides humbling a packed field of Lake Region supporters to beat them 17 to 14 in girls’ Netball.
Emakima and Bugengi Primary Schools from Nzoia beat the 2015 defending champions from Highland Region scoring 87 and 88 marks out of the possible hundred in girls and boys gymnastics respectively.
Nzoia failed to defend their 2015 boys’ soccer tattle after losing 2-0 to Coast Region in the semi-finals and subsequently losing to Metropolitan Region 2-1 in the playoffs.
Coast Region won the girls Hand Ball title for the first time in six years, after beating defending champions Nzoia by 15 to 12 in a highly contested match.
Host Mau Region kept home the boys’ Handball title after beating Metropolitan 18 to 16 to reclaim the title they last won in 2013.
Mau beat Lake Region 26 goals to 16 to emerge position three in Handball girls while Lake Region retained position three in handball boys’ after edging out Nzoia by 22 to 19 in the playoffs.
Mau Region also beat Coast 17 to 4 and thrashed Highland 27 to 11 to take position three in both girls and boys Netball.
As a result, host Mau Region emerged position two in the tournament followed by Lake Region, Coast, Metropolitan, Highland, Aberdare and Nothern Region respectively.
Over 1200 pupils from across the country participated in the event.
The national finals are a representation of the top schools from the regions across Kenya previously known as provinces.
Nairobi is participating as the Metropolitan region, Nyanza as Lake region, Rift Valley as Nakuru region, Coast as Mombasa region, Central as Aberdare region, Western as Nzoia region, North Eastern as Garissa region and the old Eastern Province as Northern region.
