White house announced yesterday that US President Barrack Obama has cut short a bilateral meeting with Philippines leader Rodrigo Duterte which was to be held today on the sidelines of a global leaders gathering hosted by Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Laotian following a blustering Obscene name calling incident where Duterte called Obama ‘a son of a whore’. ASEAN is a 10-nation association made up of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia.
It’s alleged that Duterte got furious because he had been warned that he would be questioned by US President about the war on drugs in his country which has claimed over 2000 lives in a span of just two months.
Duterte however, declared war on drugs and said he won’t rest until he clears out drugs in the country. During a news conference just before the Philippines leader left for Laos for the Summit, the Philippine leader was heard warning Obama not to throw around questions and statements and instead be respectful to his country.
He declared that he would not allow the American leader, who he obscenely referred to as ‘a son of a whore’, to lecture him on human rights.
President Obama has however made a response terming him as colourful. “I have seen some of those colorful statements in the past. Clearly, he’s a colorful guy. It’s obvious that the Filipino people are some of our closest friends and allies, the Philippines is a treaty ally of ours and I always want to make sure that if I’m having a meeting, it’s actually productive and we’re getting something done.”
However, in his statement, through his spokesman, Duterte has apologized for his words saying that he regrets expressing the rant and is looking on to ironing out differences with Obama.
