Parents in Vihiga have been warned against settling defilement cases out of court in a bid to reduce the vice and promote girl child education. Chavakali Assistant County Commissioner George Obara said the guilty parents will be arrested and charged in court. “We cannot allow such behavior to go unpunished. The culprits must be arrested and charged in the court of law,” said Obara.
Obara added that courts are there to arbitrate between the affected parties and charge the responsible offenders. He called on the parents to be responsible and ensure that during this holiday tuition the minors are taken care of to avoid such predicaments.
He noted that some parents were colluding with the suspected persons to terminate the case against them thus putting more girls at risk. “The defilement rate in Western Kenya is alarming and the parents must protect the children by reporting such cases to the police,” said Obara.
He said there was an increase in defilement cases because many cases were not reported to the police while other parents opted to settle the matter out of court.
The Administrator who was speaking at Homunoywa primary school in Sabatia Sub County during the issuance of bursary to students by the area MP Alfred Agoi, said children should be safeguarded from social ills in the society.
He also appealed to the locals to remain calm during the electioneering period and preach peace. “Elections come and go. Let us remain peaceful during and after elections, “said Obara.
