One person has died and another one seriously injured after being knocked down by a police car at Amerikwai market in the outskirts of Busia town along the Busia-Malaba road on Wednesday morning.
The deceased woman, who is a Chakol division veterinary officer, was travelling on a motorbike and was branching to her place of work when the police land cruiser attached to Kotur police post in Teso South hit them from behind killing her on the spot and injuring the motorist severely.
The locals have urged the government to ensure that the driver who caused the accident and later rushed to hospital after he was beaten by irate members of the public is arraigned in court, noting that this is not the first time the vehicle has caused an accident, “This is the third time this particular police vehicle from Kotur is causing an accident and death but nothing has been done. We want justice to be realized for the woman who was killed and the injured bodaboda operator. Let the case not die because it’s the police who has caused the accident.”
They have also called on the contractor tarmacking the road Busia-Malaba road to erect speed bumps which will help reduce such accidents, “Vehicles are driven on this road at a high speed because of the tarmac endangering lives of other road users. We are appealing to the contractor to erect bumps at various sections more so like at such markets and trading centres to reduce the accidents.”
Police officers from Adungos and Busia town arrived at the scene minutes later and managed to contain the irate crowd that wanted to lynch the police vehicle that caused that accident, and which was later driven to Busia police station.
