One person died on the spot while fifteen others sustained serious injuries after a vehicle they were travelling in got involved in an accident at Chebukwa along the Sikata – Kimilili road.
According to the survivors, the vehicle which was on a funeral escort, plunged into one of the holes on the road near Chebukwa and lost its control, hitting a motor bike which was on the escort trail resulting in the death of its rider.
Although they claimed the driver was over speeding, they have asked the leaders to team up and repair road irregardless of the avoidable mistake. “The road so far has been consuming the lives of innocent people while the leaders are eating.” One of them said
Speaking at the Bungoma Referral Hospital while receiving medication they said the vehicle went off the left side of the road hitting the bodaboda rider before it rolled several times leaving around sixteen people with serious injuries.
The Kabuchai Chwele ward member of county assembly James Barasa Mukhongo appealed to the county government and the national governments to recapture the road before many lives are lost.
“We have relentlessly insisted to the county and the national government, through the responsible authorities, that they repair the road, but nothing has been done. Around 30 live are lost every month and if the government ca not intervene at this level then its better we close the road rather than letting many people perish.” Mukhongo said.
However, the area MCA asked the county government through the department of special program to stand in for the hospital bills for those nursing injurious.
He said poor roads are to blame for frequent road accidents.
The motor bike riders using the same road faulted the leaders for failing to adhere to their cries.
