Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has ordered the removal of all corpses in public morgues in Kakamega as a measure to combat the spread of the Covid-19 virus.
Oparanya announced the measure saying that the County will waive all the mortuary fees to give those with bodies a humble time calling upon them to dispose the bodies as soon as possible. He also announced that the hospitals will not preserve any dead bodies for the next 30 days adding that the County will instead support those who will lose their loved ones during this period to befit them a decent burial in the shortest time possible.
The Governor was speaking at the Kakamega Refferal Hospital after visiting the isolation centre that has been set aside to be used in case of any Coronavirus case in the County. The County has set aside Kshs 110 million in an effort to combat the spread of the virus.
He called upon business people, public and private office holders to ensure that they exercise hand washing hygiene as he also declared the closure of public markets in the County. The Governor called upon boda boda operators to avoid unnecessary groupings and advised those in the public transport sector to ensure their passengers access hand sanitisers.
The County also held talks with the clergy in an effort to control their congregations.
Meanwhile, Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has called upon the national government to urgently release emergency funds that are to be used in the fight against the spread of the virus. Malala who also toured the facility to establish the County’s preparedness in combating the disease was disappointed that no money had been disbursed and that most of the health workers at the facility were still ignorant of the disease. He urged the national and County assemblies to adjourn for the time being in an effort to deal with the virus.
