As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to cause havoc, markets are still proving a hindrance to the fight against the spread of the virus, with challenges such as reluctance of people to wear face masks appropriately, lack of handwashing points still prevalent.
When the virus first landed in Kenya, people were keen to observe the Ministry of Health directives, and County governments, security officers were more active when it came to enforcing them, but now those days are long gone. A spot check around Webuye showed the reclusive position some have taken in markets, bars and restaurants.
A shopkeeper in Kamukuywa, who sought anonymity, said he decided to sell goods to customers without adhering to the Covid-19 infection prevention guidelines because he tried to enforce them and was about to lose customers.
He said neighboring stalls were not following the rules either and due to the fear of having to shut down his business, he decided to ignore the requirements, customers slowly trickled back as a result. He said the police officers and County officials are only interested in taking bribes, saying they are immensely contributing to the spread of the virus in the country.
