The Kenya National Union of Nurses Secretary General Seth Panyako has urged Health CS Mutahi Kagwe and Health PS Susan Mochache to step aside over their alleged involvement in the Covid-19 funds misuse scandal. Speaking in Kakamega, Panyako said the two should have already resigned.
Pressure is mounting on the two to step aside after being heavily linked with the scandal. Appearing before the Senate Health and Ad Hoc Committee on Covid-19 last week, suspended KEMSA CEO Jonah Manjari said he received directions from the two to proceed and award tenders for the procurement of different items at inflated prices that led to the loss of billions of shillings. “The humble thing you (Kagwe, Mochache) can do for this County is to step aside,” said Panyako, adding that if they can’t resign or aren’t sacked by President Uhuru Kenyatta, then the scandal remains a “royal heist.”
Furthermore, Lugari MP Ayub Savula has called for the same, saying the two officials shouldn’t be in office. Speaking in Lugari, the MP said they should face the law due to their actions, “If Coronavirus would’ve infiltrated Lugari, we would’ve buried many people,” he added. In his address to the nation on Wednesday, President Kenyatta directed the anti graft agencies to conduct and finish the probe into the scandal within 21 days, pledging that no one involved will be spared.
