As schools close for the august holiday, parents have been urged to encourage their children to participate in co-curricular activities apart from concentrating only on academic affairs as it may be a source of income for them in future.
While addressing education stake holders during an annual general meeting at Mukuyuni girls, Milima ward Member of the County Assembly Andrew Lichuma, said that it is important for parents to support their children’s talents by letting them participate in co-curricular activities while in school as it will give them exposure.
He further gave out his personal donation of ten thousand shillings to fund the school choir which qualified for the ongoing national choir competition in Nairobi.
Lichuma urged students to maintain discipline during the choir competitions reminding them that they will be ambassadors of Tongaren Sub County as well as the entire Bungoma County at the festivals.
He also called upon parents to support local schools by ensuring that they have their children study in the schools and also pay school fees on time explaining that parents in established schools also began supporting the schools by adhering to the needs of the school in time.
He further cautioned other stakeholders against engaging politics in matters of schools saying that it will be the beginning of a downfall to schools and therefore the administration should be positively supported to let the schools perform to their best.
His sentiments were echoed by Ndivisi girls’ high school Principal Judith Wamocho, who urged stakeholders to support education initiatives in the school to have their children perform well in the national examinations.
She encouraged parents to take care of their children during this august holiday that is dominated by circumcision ceremonies among the Luhya community, emphasizing that the students, especially girls have to be taken good care off to avoid early pregnancies.
