Matete Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner Philip Sigei has urged parents and guardians to guide their children while interacting with different social media platforms.
Addressing residents at Matete grounds, Sigei warned that many children have been harassed, misled by interacting with media platforms without guidance from their parents.
According to him, children are excited by many enticing platforms of social media which are harmful to them if they are not guided from the onset.
The DCC suggested to the parents to guard their phones or closely monitor children the time they borrow phones from them.
“Please parents control your children even if they use your phones, laptops or even desk tops in your homes so that they make good use of them rather than harming them in the long run,” Sigei said.
Sigei noted that children should be introduced to phones and other social media gadgets in moderation so that they make good use of them as they grow up.
He suggested that parents/guardians, teachers and the entire society at large should help in guiding children so that they can make good use of social media platforms to better their lives rather than ruining them.
Sigei said that cyber bullying against children and grown-ups is real and it only happens in social media platforms where many have been affected including loss of lives.
Sigei opined that schools, parents should be on the lead guiding the children on the importance of using social media platforms to impact their future lives.
However, he praised the social media platforms for making children more informed than before. If used well, Sigei agreed that social media platforms shall lead to a progressive society full of sharing knowledge, information hence making this world a better place to live.
