Patient hangs himself at Vihiga Referral Hospital

A forty two year old man committed suicide Thursday night at the Vihiga Refferal Hospital’s emergency stairs barely two days after his admission at the facility.

James Mbotela is alleged to have sneaked from the ward at around 8. pm heading to the toilets and never came back until the nursing officer is said to have reported the matter to the security who initiated the search that failed, according to the deceased wife Josphine Azibina.

It is alleged the search was unsuccessful till morning when the deceased wife and sister Jane Mpingo alerted the security guards over the incidence.

The two pointed an accusing finger at the security over negligence and laxity during the deceased body search.

“The security officers were unbothered about the search, they told us we have brought a thug and not a patient we were shocked.” Said Avisinwa.

“We searched the body from eight and we did not have a trace as the security guards were reluctant, “Avisiwa continued,” At around 7 am we found the body hanging at the stairs and reported the matter back to them.”

The Hospital administration led by county’s Health Executive Member Zilpah Andiva confirmed the incidence and said the matter is in the hands of police despite giving contradictory information over the same.

She refuted claims that the deceased body had been discovered by the family members but by the security guards.

“We can confirm the incidence has happened and the matter is with the police. The deceased had gone to the toilet and never came back, the security guards are the ones who found the body at the scene after the nursing officer had reported to them, “said Kageha.

The incidence happened barely two weeks after the facility had been involved in another controversial twist of events after area Mp Yusuf Chanzu tried to access the hospital by force after the guards denied him access by the orders from County officials.

The facility is being manned by the county security team after the private company security that was manning it withdrew its security last month over unpaid dues from the County Government.

The facility has been frequently accused of negligence and laxity by the public over the deplorable services offered.

The man hails from Shikhokho sub location in Ikolomani, Kakamega County.
