Commissioner of police in charge of the peace-building initiative in the North Rift region Robinson Ndiema is dead. Confirming the incident on Tuesday, West Pokot County Commissioner Apollo Okello said the officer collapsed yesterday evening at his home in Trans Nzoia and was rushed to Cherengany hospital in Kitale, where he was pronounced dead.
He said the deceased was in the company of his wife at their home and she left for a few minutes and headed to the market centre and when she came back she found he had collapsed.
Okello confirmed that until his death, the late Ndiema was the commissioner of police in charge of the peace-building initiative in the North Rift region. He said he was a humble officer who had a positive outlook on issues even if they appeared difficult. “He used to give hope in situations that seemed difficult to security personnel and always encouraged us,” he said.
He said last week they had a peace meeting with all warriors from the North Rift region at Eldoret and the officer had been tasked with some resolutions, which he had to ensure were fully implemented. “We shall miss his services as a government. May his soul rest in peace and may God give the family strength to withstand the loss,” he said.
Officers who worked with the deceased have described him as humble reformed warriors from the region have received the news with disbelief and said that they will continue preaching peace in the region.
Wilson Merikamar, a pastor and a former warrior, said that he decided to surrender his gun to the government after the commissioner held several meeting in the region and urged them to surrender the guns.
