A police officer was hacked to death by his brother in Teso South Sub County over undisclosed family disputes. Corporal Edwin Wasike who works in Bumula Sub County in Bungoma County died while undergoing treatment at Bungoma West Hospital where he was rushed from Amukura Mission Hospital.
The police and family members have given different versions over how Edwin met his death. Teso South Deputy County Commissioner Solomon Chepoton said the two brothers had quarrelled over their late father George Ochokolo’s estate.
The DCC said Edwin went to his younger brother’s house armed with a machete but he managed to snatch it from him and cut him twice on the head.
On the other hand, the deceased’s Aunt Evelyne Ityeng said Ekeya attacked his brother with a machete when he found him seated outside his house, a few metres from his house. Ityeng said she was at Amukura centre when she got a call that her nephew had been attacked by his brother with a panga. “I drove home to find that Edwin had been rushed to the Mission Hospital by a good samaritan; at the hospital I found a nurse administering first aid before he was moved to Bungoma West Hospital,” she said.
Ityeng said the hospital referred them to Kakamega for CT scan where doctors confirmed Edwin had two deep cuts on the head. He was taken back to Bungoma West Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.
Former Amukura Central Member of the County Assembly Patrick Ombo condemned the incident and called on brothers and sisters to learn to solve family disputes amicably instead of engaging in fatal disputes. “I am also appealing to parents to ensure they divide their estate to their children before they die to avoid division in families,” he said. The body was moved to Life Care Mortuary in Bungoma to await post mortem examination.
