Having only two buildings which serve as classes and an office, the fate of 450 pupils of Chemoikuut primary school in Chesikaki ward of Mt Elgon is in a limbo as schools plan to reopen next week.
The schools chairman Toywet Ndiema says the school started way back in 2012 and it’s progress has been very slow especially with minimal government input, revealing parents stepped in to build a semi permanent structure which he said cannot sustain the pupils.
He added that they are in need of help from both the County as well as the national government saying it will be hard for them to observe the Ministry of Health Covid-19 guidelines. His sentiments were echoed by a parent, Mama Naliaka, who said they can’t afford to take their children elsewhere and will have to endure the harsh conditions in the school saying the government should chip in to help.
She disclosed that parents will not afford masks for their children and are a worried lot that the pupils may contract Coronavirus. She added that they also don’t have toilets as well as a kitchen to enable cooking for the teachers and class eight candidates.
