More arrests of senior officials involved in corruption are on the way, according to President Uhuru Kenyatta, who assured Kenyans that there is no room for corruption in his administration. Speaking during the 55th Madaraka Day celebrations at Kinoru stadium in Meru, President Kenyatta voiced his pleasure with the recent arrests of officials who were implicated in corruption, notably the NYS scandal, “I want officials, particularly senior ones, who are directly implicated in corruption to have no place in my administration and for them to know where they belong, in jail,” he said.
The President noted that corruption and divisions are the main problems that have plagued the nation at the moment, saying the challenge posed by corruption is equivalent to the thorn of colonialism, “The challenge may look huge but we declare it will be diminished. Like colonialism was defeated, so too we shall defeat corruption,” affirmed President Kenyatta.
He said the scourge of corruption is huge and may affect the future of the country, adding that it must be fought and won by all Kenyans. Furthermore, he noted that the entire senior team in charge of prosecution is new, but still maintained that they know their mandate, mission and what Kenyans expect from them, “The DPP, police are on the move and are making decisive steps to build strong cases,” he said.
Following Chief Justice David Maraga’s pledge to marshal the judiciary to fight corruption during the national prayer breakfast event on Thursday, President Kenyatta affirmed that the judiciary has a vital role to play in helping senior investigative and security officials to ensure those implicated in corruption are prosecuted, “Their work will bear fruit when the judiciary also responds by ensuring the frivolous and obstructive use of the court system to avoid responsibility will no longer be allowed,” he said, “I welcome the assurance of the judiciary leadership that with the rest of the government and Kenyans they are in this war for the integrity of our country.”
