President Uhuru Kenyatta has affirmed the government is keen on reviving the sugar sector, with the revival of Mumias and Nzoia Sugar companies vital. He said the government will fast track the implementation of the sugar task force report, with one key move being the writing off of debts owed by the millers. The sugar sector revival report was compiled by a task force led by Agriculture CS Peter Munya and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya.
The government through the Agriculture Ministry has published the sugar sector regulations and is in the process of strengthening the legal framework to anchor sector reforms. President Kenyatta med Governors from Western on Wednesday at Harambee House, and they included Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, Vihiga Governor Wilber Ottichilo, Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati, Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong and Trans Nzoia Governor Patrick Khaemba. Also present were Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa and COTU boss Francis Atwoli.
