President Uhuru Kenyatta has once again urged Kenyans to take up the chance to for Constitutional changes, weeks after the release of the BBI report. The President, who addressed the nation during a joint sitting of Parliament, said major changes are needed to the Constitution and other laws so as to lay the foundation for a prosperous future and that Kenyans must seize what he termed as the “Constitutional moment” to deliver for future generations. “This moment in time is our meeting with destiny. When generations come long after we are gone, let them say that we made the right decision at this moment; that we chose unity over division; that we dreamt of and birthed a happier, more harmonious and more prosperous nation.”
He also urged Kenyans to constructively and objectively consider the recommendations in the BBI report, adding that a positive discourse on the same should be followed with a view to effecting far-reaching changes to that will address the perennial challenges Kenya has faced, including negative ethnicity, equitable development among others. He called on leaders to shun destructive politics, saying that the wages of bad politics is the people’s suffering and ruin.
He said neighboring nations need a handshake, with fair competition, alluding to the fact that Kenya ahs learnt from past encounters, “We have learned as Kenyans that elections alone cannot bring peace and unity to a divided people. For that, leaders must reach out to each other and build bridges over turbulent waters to allow the people to cross into safety and prosperity.” He pointed out that Kenya’s state of security will also be strong if sober and inclusive politics is practiced.
