President William Ruto on Monday presided over the launch of the issuance of bonuses for sugarcane farmers in Mumias sugar factory in Kakamega County.
The move is a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts by the government to restore the miller, as well as revitalize the sugar industry in the Lake Region Economic Bloc and the entire Country. The launch saw a total of 150 million being disbursed to farmers who supplied sugarcane to the company in 2024.
In his speech during the launch, President William Ruto said that the historic issuance of bonuses to Mumias Sugar Company farmers not only validates the success of the government reforms but also amplifies the sugar sector’s potential to uplift farmers and support thousands of livelihoods in the country.
“With a record 832,000 tonnes of sugar produced last year, Kenya is on course to attain surplus production and commence regional exports by 2026, turning sugarcane cultivation into a viable and rewarding venture, ” the head of state said.
President Rut cautioned the leaders to stop populist politics and instead support the government developmental agenda.
President Ruto who is on a one week western Kenya development tour is expected to tour and launch several projects in Bungoma, Kakamega and Busia counties.
The event brought together key leaders, including Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki, Prime Cabinet Secretary Hon. Musalia Mudavadi, National Assembly Speaker Hon. Moses Wetangula, Agriculture CS Mutahi Kagwe, Cooperatives CS Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya and Members of Parliament, led by the area MP Hon Peter Salasya, alongside farmers, elected leaders, and other stakeholders.
