Today, President William Ruto arrived in Kampala, Uganda, for a one-day official visit to participate in the African Union (AU) Extraordinary Summit on the Post-Malabo Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP). This summit is a crucial event for advancing Africa’s agricultural development agenda and shaping the future of the continent’s agri-food systems.
CAADP: A Vision for Agricultural Transformation
CAADP, a flagship initiative under the AU’s Agenda 2063, seeks to eliminate hunger and poverty through agriculture-led development. It envisions the transformation of Africa’s agricultural and food systems, ensuring food security and fostering economic growth across the continent. During the summit, leaders will assess the progress made towards CAADP’s targets and work towards adopting the Kampala Declaration, which will set a shared vision for transforming agri-food systems from 2026 to 2035.
Kenya’s Commitment to Agricultural Growth and Food Security
At the summit, President Ruto will showcase Kenya’s substantial efforts to enhance food security, reduce poverty, create jobs, and promote sustainable agricultural growth. He will highlight how Kenya’s agricultural policies align with the CAADP framework, emphasizing their contribution to the country’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda and Vision 2030. President Ruto’s participation underscores Kenya’s ongoing commitment to agricultural transformation and its dedication to achieving food security and economic prosperity for all.
Building Regional Partnerships
In addition to his participation in the summit, President Ruto is expected to meet with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and other African leaders. The discussions will focus on advancing regional priorities, strengthening collaboration, and enhancing mutual support for the implementation of the AU Institutional Reforms. As Champion of AU Institutional Reforms, President Ruto will also prepare for his upcoming inaugural progress report on the reform agenda, reinforcing his leadership role in shaping the future of the African Union.
