Plans are underway for lowering sexual age from eighteen years to sixteen and this has sparked mixed reaction leaders, parents and church leaders across Bungoma county. The proposal to lower the sex consent age from 18 years to 16 years has drawn mixed reactions. The proposal, made by three judges, was fronted after it was noted some men are spending time in jail for sleeping with underage girls whose consent had been held to be immaterial just bcaue they were under 18 years.
However, former councillor Ezekiel Mukasa Kilwake has faulted the proposal, saying it will have a negative effect on young girls in the villages, saying if they engage in sexual activities at the age of 16 their education path will be curtailed, coupled with lots of dropouts. Kilwake added that this will also cause lots of early pregnancies amongst school going girls, and young single parents.
He further noted that allowing one to indulge in sexual activities while that young is against African morals and therefore urged the government to consider setting the sex consent age at 20 years, given that by then, many youths will have finished primary and secondary school education.
