ODM leader Raila Odinga, COTU boss Francis Atwoli and Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu have affirmed that the BBI train is here to stay. Speaking to the press after a meeting of the Trade Union Movement on Thursday, the leaders said the BBI is meant to transform the lives of Kenyans and uplift the living standards of workers and young people. Their sentiments come a day after leaders allied to Deputy President William Ruto castigated the BBI saying it’s being used to benefit Raila Odinga’s 2022 Presidential ambitions.
However, Raila said the BBI isn’t aimed at creating an advantage for any particular person and it isn’t directed at the 2022 elections but meant to improve the lives of Kenyans , “We are saying that Kenya deserves better as a country. Kenya does not deserve to play in the league which it’s playing in terms of development…we all appreciate that our people are undergoing serious difficulties and challenges,” said the ODM leader.
He said the BBI is laying the foundation for Kenya’s socio-economic growth. On his part, COTU boss Francis Atwoli said they still support the BBI and the handshake,” We have no apology to make and we will continue to support it.” He said parts of the BBI report that will require amendment in parliament will go through the process and those parts that require a referendum will also be subjected to one.
Governor Charity Ngilu said the BBI will ensure resources are shared equitably and ensure young people also get employment. She said the BBI will put everyone in place and ensure all people enjoy, adding that it will heed to the demands of those people who have been oppressed coupled with dealing with issues that have faced Kenya since Independence.
