Rains cause destruction at Mahemas primary school
Mahemas primary school in Lugari Sub County is at the moment staring closure after heavy rainfalls caused wanton destruction at the institution.
Speaking to West Media, the school’s head teacher, Mr. Luke Akusi, narrated how the 1:30 pm incident saw toilets used by boys, one classroom and the school kitchen destroyed by the heavy rain falls that pounded the area.
The catastrophe saw the toilets collapsed with a section of the kitchen and one classroom rooftops being blown off by the strong winds accompanying the rains as the administration block flooded by running water.
“A 10,000 liters water tank which had just been installed here through the World Bank sponsored Western Kenya Community Driven Development and Flood mitigation Project was not spared either as it was blown several meters away,” added Mr. Akusi.
He said no one was injured since most of the pupils had left for lunch and those in standard eight who feed at the school were safe in one of the classes.
“No causalities were reported because prior to the rainfall pupils had gone home for lunch,” said Mr. Akusi.
With a population of over 300 boys, the school has now been left with only one toilet for use which according to the public health requirement cannot serve the population and consequently put the health of both the pupils and teachers in a precarious position as
they are likely to get infected with contagious diseases.
Consequently, the parents led by Mr. Daniel Lukusi are now sending a passionate appeal to the area MP Ayub Savula to intervene through the constituency development fund and salvage the situation.

According to Mr. Akusi the school had requested for funds from the CDF kitty to put up more toilets in July last year but their request has not been acted on.
“With current complex situation facing the school, I called upon the National and Kakamega county governments and any other well-wisher to urgently come to the aid of the institution,” said Mr. Akusi.
