Rains destroy classroom and office block at Kilibot primary school in Matete

The damage caused by heavy rains at Kilibot primary school

As the government continues with plan to reopen schools, Kilibot primary school in Matete, Kakamega County is in dire need of help after heavy rains caused wanton destruction at the institution.

Speaking to West Media, the school’s headteacher, Mr. Wanjala Makokha narrated how one classroom and administration block were destroyed by the heavy rainfalls estimating the damage at over Kshs. 3 million.

According to the headteacher, iron sheets were blown several meters away from rooftops due to strong winds accompanying the rains.

He said text books and other vital documents were destroyed by the rains with few items being salvaged after his deputy Mr. Levy Wanjala Situma and PTA chairman Aggrey Lunao together with the neighbours rushed to the school to save the property.

Mr. Wanjala said the affected classroom is used by grade one pupils whom he said will be forced to take classes under trees if quick measurers are not taken to save the situation saying that the school was already facing shortage of classrooms.

He said the situation might be worse and more pupils may be forced to learn under trees since another classroom will have to be converted into administration block.

Faced with the complex situation, Mr. Wanjala has called upon the national and Kakamega County governments and any other well-wisher to urgently come to the aid of the institution.

His sentiments were echoed by PTA chairman Aggrey Lunalo who appealed for the construction of two classrooms and an administration block.
