Learning activities were paralyzed for a better part of Monday October 12th at Matili Technical Training Institute of Kimilili sub County after students locked the main gate barring workers and lecturers of the institute from entering the compound until a leaking roof of the female hostel is repaired by the administration.
One of the female students Gladys Mundoti revealed that their hostel which houses close to two hundred students is in a dilapidated condition saying the roofs have rusted and worn out iron sheets adding that with the rains they were forced to sleep on wet mattresses.
She disclosed that they have been raising the concern to the administration without proper action being taken which prompted them to paralyze learning activities in the school until when the roof has been repaired
The female students said they were forced to take shelter in the administration block until the rains subsided vowing not to allow normal activities in the school to continue until the issue was sorted out.
The institutions’ students chairman Eric Murunga said it is unfortunate that the school administration has been adamant to react on the affairs affecting the school.
He said their pleas have been ignored and the administration has embarked on constructing another building in the school yet the female hostel has not been repaired even after being told countless times.
Murunga said the students will not resume their learning activities until the administration delivers new iron sheets and kick start the repairing process of the hostel as the female students are living in a pathetic condition yet they have paid school fees inclusive of accommodation.
“With the onset of El Nino rains our female colleagues are a fearful lot with the leaking roof of the hostel hence the need for the school administration to move with speed to repair it failure to which learning activities will not be resumed “ he said
However our efforts to reach the school management were fruitless as they could not be reached for comments regarding the issue.
