A key suspect in the murder of a village vigilante group member in Shinyalu was arrested by the public a few kilometers from the crime scene at a Busaa club in a neighboring constituency.
The public pounced on the suspect as he sipped the traditional brew at a club in Malinya area. They then administered instant mob justice to him before handing him over to the nearby administration police post.
He and an accomplice from the area, are alleged to have accosted the deceased Eronius Anzimbu in a narrow path leading through a maize plantation with a machete, butchered and demobilized him in what villagers claim was a revenge attack against the deceased alleged role in the village vigilante operations.
As fate would have it, to rather die alone in the plantation, Anzimbu crawled out and reportedly named his assailants before he was taken to the Kakamega county general hospital where he died of hemorrhage ten hours later as doctors fought to stop bleeding.
According to villagers, the attacker, a known criminal had accused Anzimbu, a no nonsense member of a vigilante group in the area of attacking him with a panga at night two months ago as he strolled at night and vowed to revenge.
On Monday, he allegedly accomplished the threat confronting the deceased who had attended a funeral in the area and injuring him with machete cuts that lead to his death.
Tuesday morning, youths from Anzimbu’s clan raided the home of the suspected attacker, torched two houses and destroyed property of unknown value after reports swept the village that he had succumbed to the injuries.
Regional police boss Moses Ombati confirmed the arrest of the suspect saying police were still hunting down for his accomplice.
He said police had beefed up security in the area to avoid further destruction to the suspect’s family.
