A family in Kapsitwet location in Kwanza Sub County is in grief after a 12 year old class four pupil of Kapsitwet Primary School drowned in River Sabwani while grazing livestock near the flooded river. Another family is grieving after their kin drowned in one of the dams dug by a Chinese company doing a road construction project in the area.
In the first case, the victim who was in the company of two other boys, was grazing livestock near the river, before he slipped and fell in the rushing waters with his two
friends watching helplessly.
Area resident Charles Opondo said the incident wasn’t the first one and asked the government to look for possible ways of assisting locals to avert any more drowning cases. “This is the second drowning case in the last two months in the County. In April, a 16 year old boy drowned in the same river in Kwanza sub county.”
Police retrieved the body and took it to Kitale County Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem. On the other hand another family is seeking their kin who drowned in the
dam in the area on Sunday.
The 45 year old left his home around 10.00 am on Sunday to go and bathe in the dam water, and he drowned.
Confirming the incident Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Ayub Gitonga said the body of Timona Mapesa hasn’t been retrieved.
Area MCA Bernard Wanjala Mulipuko condoled with the two families and asked both the National and County governments to put in place a lasting solution to avert more deaths caused by the raging floods which he said posed great danger to locals.
Mlipuko criticized a Chinese firm for the woes bedeviling residents
claiming it removed walls previously erected by the Lake Basin Development Authority that were put in place to control flooding.
