The impact of continued heavy rainfall in Nandi and the nation at large has led to increased number of impassable roads in some regions. Transport in some parts of Nandi like Tinderet have been heavily affected with bridges swept away. One person, who was trying to cross the flooded Kipkaren-Selia river, died after drowning, weeks ago.
Several roads have been cut off by mudslides in areas like Chepkitile, Kipsakiat, Kipsisin, Kapsoito and Kiptega prompting residents to vacate to safer places. The County Transport CEC Eng. Drice Rono has said the Nandi County government is keen to recognize the vital role played by a good transport network, noting it promotes economic growth and development. He said road works have resumed after an earlier suspension that lasted two weeks. “Road works including grading, graveling and murraming of grassroots roads and opening up of feeder roads are ongoing,” he said, adding that over 200KM of roads will be sorted out.
Nandi residents have previously decried the poor state of roads, an example being the Kaptembu-Kipkaren-Selia road in Mosop sub county which was messed up due to heavy rainfall. The road from Kapng’etich-Lelmokwo-Ndalat-Turbo is also in a sad state, and according t the Nandi government, its rehabilitation has been budgeted for and the works will commence soon.
