Deputy President William Ruto has maintained his stand against a referendum, amidst calls from different quarters to have a referendum that will review the constitution of the executive, introducing the position of prime minister and his deputy. The deputy President has insisted the time for clinging to politics has passed, and it’s time for Kenyans to focus on the issues that affect empowerment. “Those who want to take us back to politics, please, you should give us a break,” said DP Ruto, “Kenyans want to talk about empowerment of the country.”
Several leaders including ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi had called for a referendum earlier, saying Kenyans must be open-minded so that we can review the settings which after ten years aren’t working in the interests of the people.
Deputy President William Ruto has been vocal about the issue, together with other Jubilee leaders who’ve said the conundrum of amendments shouldn’t be discussed at all. “We cannot forever be talking about the politics of power and power sharing, we must persist with the politics of empowerment,” said Deputy President Ruto.
