Wiper’s Agnes Kavindu has been declared the winner of the much anticipated Machakos Senate by-election that took place yesterday. Kavindu was today handed over the certificate by IEBC county returning officer Joyce Wamalwa.
Kavindu garnered more than 104,802 followed by his closest UDA rival Urbanus Ngengele who garnered less than 20,000 votes, a difference of 84,802 votes. Wiper collected 78 percent of the votes while UDA managed to gather 15 percent of the votes cast.
The by-election was held following the death of Boniface Kabaka last year December. This comes as a huge blow to former senator Johnson Muthama, the chairman to Ruto’s UDA party as a failed delivery to the Deputy President. This has shown that Muthama, who was once a political force in the region is clearly fading away.
Early this morning Kavindu was leading by a large margin since she had garnered 104,802 already , while her rival was at 19,705 votes. The election was however marred by low voter turnout contrary to the expectation.
UDA went ahead to congratulated Kavindu for her win as a gesture of fair play and the party said it lives to fight another day.
This by-election is an indicator that Kalonzo remains the region’s political giant unwavered.
