Peter Ndegwa is the new Safaricom CEO, and is set to start his term on April 1st 2020. The announcement, made by the telco giant, came after a resolution by the Safaricom PLC board of directors, and a day after the company introduced new and improved services for its customers. Ndegwa joins Safaricom from Diageo PLC- a British multinational alcoholic beverages company-where he is the managing director of Diageo Continental Europe.
The new boss, who has amassed over 25 years working in fast moving consumer goods and financial services sectors in Africa and Europe, will replace the late Bob Collymore who succumbed to cancer. Michael Joseph has been CEO in an acting capacity for the time being. Ndegwa oversees Diageo’s operations in North Africa, Western and Eastern Europe, Russia and the Middle East. He also had senior executive director roles at EABL in Nairobi for a period of eight years and moved to Guinness Nigeria PLC and Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited PLC as CEO, where he worked for eight years.
Safaricom has affirmed its confidence in the new CEO, “We are confident that Peter will carry on our vision of transforming lives while keeping us focused on meeting our customers’ needs and holding us to our new commitment of being Simple, Transparent and Honest,” read a statement from the Safaricom chairman.
