Posta Kenya in a landmark partnership with Safaricom have launched a digital post office box service dubbed Mpost, with dealings done through the mobile phone. Under the service, Safaricom customers can register to a post office box directly linked to their number by dialing *234*1*9# at a cost of Kshs 300 annually. Customers can also change their preferred post office.
Speaking at the launch, ICT CS Joe Mucheru said that Mpost will provide anyone in the country with a virtual post office box. He said that e-commerce is among the key drivers for the service and that the service fits squarely with Kenya’s digital economy blueprint. “Mpost is a product that brings inclusivity for the post office boxes we have. It will also make logistics for e-commerce seamless,” said Postmaster General and Postal Corporations of Kenya CEO Dan Kagwe.
Under the service, customers will receive their mails and get a notification message alerting them when they have mail to be collected at the postal branch. The mail can then be collected over a 7-day period over the counter.
