Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has been fined Kshs 15,000 after pleading guilty to breaking curfew rules. Sakaja appeared on Tuesday morning before a Kasarani court. Chief Magistrate Roselyn Onganya ruled that he has to pay the fine or face three months in prison.
He was accused of having not been listed on the schedule to the Public Order 2020, and found drinking alcohol in contravention of state curfew orders. His lawyer John Khaminwa said the Senator was remorseful, evidenced by his public apology on Monday.
Sakaja was arrested on Saturday night, hours past Friday, at a lounge in Kilimani with a few others. He was kept in custody till Saturday morning at the Kilimani police station. On Monday, the Senator admitted he was on the wrong, and resigned as the chairperson of the Senate ad hoc committee on the Coronavirus.
