Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has resigned from the Senate Covid-19 Ad Hoc committee after the flouting curfew directive on Friday night. The Senator was found drinking at a bar in Kilimani with a few other people well past midnight, and they were arrested and taken to Kilimani police station. He was later released on Saturday morning.
Speaking on Monday at the Kilimani police station where he had gone to record a statement accompanied by Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr, Sakaja took full responsibility and admitted that he made a mistake, terming the situation regrettable.
Apart from resigning as the chairman of the Senate Covid-19 committee, he said he’ll appear before a court of law on Tuesday, “I will abide by the law. No one is above the law, I am not above the law and I have paid cash bail,” he said, “The entire course of the law will follow.”
However, he questioned why a contingent of police officers brandishing guns were camped at his residence on Saturday and Sunday, “I’m not a fugitive, my children have not committed any crime. Why come intimidate them with guns? I told them if you want me to appear(at the station)I’m a leader, I’ll appear.” He further urged Kenyans to continue observing the Covid-19 infection prevention directives.
