The Bungoma County Government will hand over the Sang’alo Junction-Kanduyi dual carriageway to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) for maintenance once all pending bills are settled, Governor Kenneth Lusaka has confirmed.
Speaking during a meeting with the Senate Standing Committee on Roads and Transportation at Bunge Towers, Governor Lusaka stated that the county is committed to clearing the outstanding payments owed to the road’s contractor before the transfer takes place.
Bungoma County Executive for Roads, Bonventure Chengenk, revealed that the county government still owes the contractor Ksh. 294 million, with an accrued interest of Ksh. 108 million. He assured the committee that the payments have been budgeted for in the 2024/25 financial year and will be fully settled by the 2026/27 financial year.
The committee, chaired by Senator Eddy Gicheru Oketch, sought clarification on the status of the road’s construction, including whether there were pending bills and how the county planned to address them.
Governor Lusaka emphasized that the road’s development was part of an agreement between the Bungoma County Government and KeNHA, ensuring that once the financial obligations are met, KeNHA will take over its maintenance.
Also present at the meeting were Vice Chairperson Dr. Lelegwe Ltumbesi, Senators Mohammed Chute, Peris Tobiko, Enoch Wambua, and Crystal Asige.
