Lugari MP Ayub Savula has urged Kenyans to carefully read the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report and make an informed decision when time comes.
Addressing mourners during the burial of Sammy Akhonya Kweya at Mufutu village in his constituency, Savula joined other leaders calling for the referendum instead of going through amendments by the parliament.
Savula said the report was hatched from the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga and only few selected Kenyans got a chance to give their view to the task force when it moved round the 47 counties and therefore it was necessary for it to be subjected to referendum and involve all Kenyans.
He said if taken to parliament the report was bound to be mutilated by politicians to suit their political interest or kill it on the floor of the assembly for lack of parliamentary quorum to pass it.
“We have funny character of MPs in the national assembly who can be bribed with as little money as Kshs 10,000 to mutilate or kill the whole document and that’s why I am for referendum,” said Savula.
However Savula said some of the proposals in the BBI report required amendments before going for referendum.
The MP rooted for an executive prime minister saying the proposed post as per the report was so demeaning. “Does it mean that if somebody like Oparanya or Mudavadi wants to be the prime minister he must vie for a parliamentary seat? That will be belittling them because they are above that level,” said Savula
His sentiments were echoed by ODM communication officer Philip Etale who urged Kenyans to take their time and carefully go through the report once copies are made available to the public starting next month and make wise decision during referendum. He said they should not allow the process to be hijacked by politicians but each one of the should make his/her own decision after reading the report.
