Kenyan schools continue to dazzle in the ongoing East Africa Secondary school games at Eldoret Sports Club, in Eldoret. St. Peter’s Mumias were crowned the new rugby sevens champions after defeating Uganda’s Kololo Secondary school in the final played on Thursday. Upper Hill School finished third after overcoming Kenyan counterparts Laiser Hill Academy 19-7. The national champions lost their semi-final game to Kololo 17-14, while St. Peter’s ground out a 7-0 win against Upper Hill in the other semi-final of the school games. Kololo took the lead in the final, and lead the game on two occasions, but the Kenyan representatives came back on both occasions and set up a grand finish to scoop the title.
Kakamega Boys High school, on the other hand, clinched the 15s rugby tournament after registering four successive wins. This maintains their well-known rugby speciality in the country and the region, one they have established through the years.
On matters football, St. Johns’ Kaloleni and Wiyeta are through to the semi-finals in the girls’ category. St. Johns’ defeated Nginda Girls 2 goals to nil in the first quarterfinal, after Hellen Ochieng’ scored a brace. She opened the scoring with a great finish in the 54th minute and added the second goal in the 67th minute. But the most anticipated game of the day will see Bukembe secondary school come up against Uganda’s St. Mary’s Kitende. Bukembe has scaled the heights and will surely be confident heading into the match, although their opponents are no light pushers after holding the Kenyan team to a one all draw in the group stage.
