Schools boards should hire trained teachers

Board of management in schools should hire trained teachers with Teachers Service Commission (TSC) numbers in a bid to weed out sex pests in schools.

Vihiga County Women representative Dorcas Kedogo said employing form four leavers who do not adhere to ethics and regulations of TSC is a threat to girl child education.

“The board of management should employ trained teachers who can be traced through their TSC numbers in case of any sexual assault,” said Kedogo.

She said trained teachers had been skilled on how to treat and care for the students unlike the untrained teachers whose background may be unknown.

Kedogo said head teachers should be very cautious while employing such untrained teachers to fill in for inadequate staffs.

“As much as many schools have staff shortages, TSC should ensure that trained teachers are employed for the time being by the board,” said Kedogo.

She said once vacant positions are advertised by the TSC, then the trained teachers employed by the board should be given first priority in filling those positions.

The TSC has come up with a proposal to ensure that only trained teachers are employed by the board for discipline purposes and adherence to the TSC teaching standards.

The women representative was speaking at Mbihi primary school in Vihiga Sub County during a farewell party for a retired teacher at the institution.

However KUPPET Chairman Omboko Milemba dismissed the proposal of employing trained teachers arguing the move can only be achieved if TSC employs more teachers.

“More schools have shortage of teachers and it will only be prudent if TSC employ enough teachers in schools to bar the boards from hiring untrained teachers,” said Milemba.

He added that most teachers hired by the board were necessary to improve performance in schools and increase teacher- student ratio.

Milemba was speaking during the burial of former teacher Ishmael Simekha in Emuhaya Sub County.
