The Luhya community is in a good position to produce a President to lead the country, but it’s deprived of the position due to individualism and selfishness. This is according to Mr. Joseph Shivelenje, a 92-year-old who hails from ltum village in Shinyalu sub county in Kakamega County. Shivelenje, a former chief who majorly worked under the whites during the colonial period argues that Luhya community has the numbers but the individual selfishness has deprived the community of the long sort position.
According to him, the Bukusu tribe leads in both numbers and academic capabilities and thus should take lead in uniting the rest of the tribes, if fruits are to be realized. Mzee has warned against young leadership arguing that leaders can only be mature men and women who can handle both the youths and the elderly in the country. He greatly blamed drug dealers among them illicit brewers for the poor economic state in the country and has called upon the government to curb the menace by introducing licensing in the sector.
Mzee Shivelenje proposed that chiefs and their assistants be mandated to ensure that youths benefit from free training available in county and national polytechnics to enable them earn skills that will help them put food on the table.
Besides, he has called upon the government to empower residents to enable them indulge in businesses, fighting idleness in the process. He further faulted leaders and company managers who have been entrusted with public office and have decided to use them for personal benefits at the expense of Kenyans, and blamed them for the collapse of giant factories which has negatively impacted on the economy.
