The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) West Pokot branch has castigated the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for reducing teachers’ salaries and denying them money for the CBA which was signed and deposited as a legal document.
The Commission stopped the pay rise of 103,624 teachers who are members of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT). The Union’s official said the move by TSC to increase teachers’ salaries while sidelining others in KNUT will affect education standards in the country.
Speaking to the press in Kapenguria, West Pokot KNUT executive secretary Martin Sembelo said TSC was set on dividing teachers in the country by having two parallel payrolls.
He called on TSC to rectify the payrolls accusing it for not paying teachers and reducing their salaries citing that it was unconstitutional.
He accused TSC of having a scheme to kill off KNUT, which is constitutionally and legally in place, hence, frustrate teachers. Sembelo said that teachers pushed for the Commission to be independent and autonomous in 2010 yet it has turned against them. “TSC is doing more harm than good by denying all teachers their rights. The motive is not good for the well being of teachers,” he said, “If there were contentious issues they shouldn’t have rushed to that radical decision making because it’s counterproductive in the teaching profession.”
He called on the President, parliamentary committee on education, Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha, the Ministry of labour and the Federation of Kenya’s Employers to intervene and rescue of teachers.
